Anna Sui, born August 4, 1964 in Detroit Michigan, dreamed of becoming a fashion designer since age 4. Her father a structural engineer and her mother a painter, she was believed to have gotten her creativeness from her mother and her business side from her father. In her 4 year old mind, a fashion designer was portrayed beautiful, stylish, always surrounded by luxurious fabrics and countless sketchbooks always off to lunch. Anna was attracted to this glamorous life so she watched lots of TV to see what she could learn. Little did she know this dream would become a reality quickly but not very easily. Anna Sui loved going fabric shopping with her mom and watching her mom sew. She would take the scraps and make clothes for her doll. Once she understood the basics of how making clothes works, she started making clothes for herself. In Anna’s teenage years, while reading Time Magazine, she came across an article about two young girls that graduated from Parsons getting discovered by a high fashion designer and moving to Paris offered a boutique. "As a kid, you think 'wow', you’ve found the magic ticket...all you have to do was move to New York and go to Parsons” (Anna Sui). Anna Sui enrolled into Parsons to follow her dream of becoming a fashion designer. In Anna’s second year at Parsons, she was hired to work at “Charlie’s Girls” with Erica Elias. Anna had her own design studio to work in and she also had sewers and drapers working under her. Her main line of work was sportswear, swimwear, and sweaters. When Charlie’s Girls closed, having that job background under her belt opened many more doors with sportswear design. In 1981 Anna thought about starting her own clothing line but didn’t know exactly how to go about starting it.
