The report indicated that based on the Michael Porter’s 5 forces, a prominent management theorist which include Supplier power, Buyer power, Competitive rivalry, Threat of substitutes and Threat of new entry, companies can find out its competitive advantages by reducing threat or make changes to adapt to the market. For further research, Walmart has been a case to study how it can gain the competitive advantage by using the Porter’ 5 forces and Internet applications.

The Internet applications like internet pages, intranet, extranet efficiently help the company deal with a series of problems and provide a broader field for customers to shopping easily. It gives immediate communication between employees and customers, and makes it more flexibility and easily to transact. Internet pages is helping to make the employees communicate better and is also helpful to marketing and sales. Intranet uses the areas such as discussion groups, e-mail and bulletin to improve communication, save time and reduce costs. Also , extranet help to increase productivities , Reduced margin of error and add flexibility for the company.

According to the 5 forces, Walmart’s certain competitive condition can be clearly seen. So the Internet applications can be used into the company operations to help it gain more advantages. Introduction

Competitive advantage is the position that a company is aiming to make more profit than other companies. In order to increase the competitive intensity and attractiveness of the company, Michael Porter’s five forces help to identify what the most important areas that can influence the market selling. It is useful both in understanding a company’s current competitive position, and the potential that the company may have. By understanding where the power lies, this theory can also be used to improve weakness and to avoid or reduce mistakes.
