The role of media has being described across general development of nations; social, cultural, and political. The phenomenal effect of the media in elimination of time and space and also the gradual extermination of ignorance; The media has created an interactive world whereby individuals are no more aliens to the diverse cultures and practices of the world, the power of sharing subjective thoughts, opinions and ideas is one of the distinctive role of the media; the free information flow and accuracy in such information.

The transition of the media from the use of papyrus to the use of paper, telegram, radio, TV and today’s widely use and innovative medium, the Internet (Kamalipour, 2007), has created a conscious need of actionable information, and has moved the world from being ignorant to being informed.

The short and long term implication of media in the development of the nations of the world cannot be denied (William, 2008). Though such effects has resulted in different theories that mostly points towards the increasing negative effects such as cultural imperialism, systematic homeostasis, convergence theory, cultural homogenization and the likes (Kamalipour, 2007); on the contrary, a rationale of information medium (media) is the shrinking of time[1] and distance for societal practices of many kinds (Robin Mansell, 2004), and the media has helped in the correction and modification of perception in different cultures and societies.

The increasing need and importance of the media in today’s global society, has moved it to the top of the food chain of world issues. The world has began to place significant importance to mediums use for information flow such as mobile-phones, digital satellite, HD-cameras and camcorders, computers, pagers and the likes, Due to the inevitable and undeniable relevance of the media to political, social, cultural development, billions of dollars are spent by different countries in-order to develop infrastructures that will help in meeting such objective, which has made innovation a daily dealing with billions pumped into it.


The role of the media on social development is phenomenal, with its incredible connective power; it has created opportunity on a vast and growing scale, unlocking potentials, and revolutionizing access to information and transforming people’s lives (Gonzalez-Mena, 2009).

The explosion of social media has also changed the way individuals and groups share information and ideas, the introduction of social media like Facebook and Twitter may have started out as a way of keeping in contact with friends and family, but the outreach is now phenomenal (Browne, 2011). The effects of media has made the world smaller, the interaction of individuals across the world has seemed like interacting in the same room; the use of medium like Skype has created a visual possibility whereby social culture can still be practiced, thereby reducing the possibility of cultural homogenization. The social media has create a verse form of awareness and has reduced the possibility obsolete information, a larger percentage of the world now receive timely information on recent invents that occur round the world. The media play a crucial role in times of devastation, for example, the Japan’s earthquake and tsunami where people were able to find missing relatives and keep in contact through Facebook and Twitter and using their mobiles phones to cover the devastation and uploading it on the internet (Browne, 2011). The implication of the media is been said to be globalization (Kamalipour, 2007), whereby the world share a universal culture, while minor cultures diminishes; the proposed implications are still being monitored as the world...
