UNIFORMS SHOULD BE WORN TO COLLEGE
Trendy hair styles, fashionable clothing and excessive accessories are all distracting variables that are by no means exhaustive. Allowing students to make their own clothing decisions for college may be very judgmental. Conversely, with everyone wearing the same type of clothing eliminates the chaos about the dress code at the tertiary level. As tertiary level students, we regard it a privilege to wear uniforms at the Montego Bay Community College. Every school is in essence a learning environment; hence we believe that wearing uniforms assist in keeping students in the right frame of mind for learning and is used as a way of identifying students belonging to a particular institution.
Have you ever noticed how distracting it can be to see a male dressed like a female, or a woman outrageously dressed going about her own personal business? Imagine this form of distraction in the classroom! If this was so, consequently, we would suffer as we would lose focus of what the teacher is saying. There should be an attempt to minimize the amount of distraction in the classroom. Should a survey be done, many persons would not agree to allow students to bring their own boom box or even a pet to school. Rather, the concern would be that the classroom environment should be free from such distractions. In fact, not wearing a uniform can be a similar form of distraction. There are already other factors in and around the classroom that are uneasy to control and can cause a student to lose focus. Such distractions include external noises, outburst in class, uses of gadgets etc. It would be wise to have college students uniformed as this is one less means of losing focus since the primary function of attending school is to acquire an education. To keep students in the correct frame of mind, the classroom should be made free of all manageable form of distractions.
